Hormone Therapy for Men and Women

Bioidentical Hormones

Fact: Hormonal imbalances and aging target both men and women.

Fact: We do not need to accept the problems that accompany them.

Are you suffering from any of the following?

  • Weight gain, loss of muscle mass, excessive aging of the skin?
  • Fatigue, stress or depression?
  • Memory issues, sleep disorders, memory issues?
  • Loss of sex drive?
  • Weakened immunity system? Insulin resistance?

Your hormones may be the culprit. We can eliminate these symptoms by restoring your hormones to their youthful levels.

Hormones regulate aging, growth, reproduction, and immune functions of the body by acting as the messengers of our central nervous system. A drop or imbalance in our hormone levels, often triggered by stress and age, has a negative impact on our overall health. To avoid or to reverse this impact, we need to restore  our hormones to their optimal levels.

Dr. Oglesbay uses bioidentical hormones to help the body achieve or maintain its optimal hormone balance. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) can reverse the hormonal imbalances and forestall the effects of aging. Bioidentical hormones are the hormones that are chemically identical in molecular structure to those our body produces naturally. and therefore they mimic our own hormones. Each patient is given a customized prescription, tailored to his or her specific needs. These bioidentical hormone prescriptions are usually custom-mixed to order by special compounding pharmacies.

Do You Know Your Hormones?

Thyroid Hormone

This is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that regulates temperature, metabolism, cerebral function, and energy.  It also increases the breakdown of visceral fat, resulting in weight loss and lower cholesterol. It protects against cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and cerebral metabolism.   Common symptoms of low or imbalanced thyroid are cold hands and feet, constipation, dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss, morning or afternoon fatigue, and defects in memory, cognition and mental slowness. This metabolic hormone decreases steadily with age.   Replenishment results in reversal of these symptoms plus increased energy and metabolism.

Testosterone

This hormone is necessary in both men and women.  Its beneficial effects include improved sexual function, improved energy, strength, and endurance.  It helps maintain muscle mass, which increases basal metabolism.  This controls weight and helps prevent diabetes and heart disease.  A very interesting benefit of testosterone is that it helps increase collagen.  This decreases fine wrinkles, improves skin texture and skin thickness. Testosterone  declines steadily after age 30.

DHEA

DHEA is an endocrine precursor to hormones, including estrogen and testosterone.  It prevents loss of sleep and osteoporosis and atherosclerosis.  It is frequently deficient in diabetics and is important to supplement if the patient has adrenal exhaustion.  DHEA strikingly effects the immune system, sex drive, metabolism, and emotional stability. DHEA declines markedly after age 30. Replacement results in immune enhancement, which is very important in fighting against infections and cancer. Recently it has also been suggested as a drug to treat lupus and connective tissue disease.

Estrogen

This is one of the main female hormones. Estrogen lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL, the good cholesterol. Bioidentical estrogen therapy protects against heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis in women. Synthetic estrogens, on the other hand, may be harmful. Premarin, or conjugated synthetic estrogens, are caustic to blood vessels. Provera, also known as medroxyprogesterone, is a particularly dangerous synthetic hormone, which actually increases the chance of breast cancer by upregulating estrogen receptors in the breast.

Melatonin

This hormone is produced by the pineal gland and declines significantly by age 40. Melatonin controls sleep cycles. It induces sleep, improves quality of sleep and increases REM sleep and deep sleep. During this deep stage of sleep the immune system is stimulated. It has anti-cancer effects and modulates immune function by activating the cytokine system.
